Pepsi's Josta — first US energy drink, killed before the market exploded

Pepsi launched Josta in 1995 — the first energy drink from a major US beverage company. Four years later it was pulled. Red Bull took the market.

怎么回事

In 1995 PepsiCo introduced Josta, a guarana-and-caffeine soft drink marketed as a 'high-energy drink.' It was the first energy drink ever launched by a major US beverage company — predating Red Bull's US arrival by two years and the entire energy-drink boom by nearly a decade. The drink was fruit-flavored, highly caffeinated, and sold in a distinctive black can with a jaguar logo.

Josta developed a cult following but remained a niche product. PepsiCo's corporate strategy shifted in the late 1990s, and the company decided to focus on its core carbonated soft-drink brands. In 1999 — just as the energy drink category was about to explode — Pepsi pulled Josta from shelves entirely. Fans launched a 'Save Josta' campaign (savejosta.org), but it was too late.

Pepsi had been first to the energy drink market but abandoned it before the category took off. Red Bull entered the US in 1997 and dominated. Pepsi later re-entered the energy category through distribution deals (Rockstar, then Mountain Dew Game Fuel) and the acquisition of Celsius in 2022 — but never reclaimed the first-mover advantage Josta had given up.

为什么会这样

  • Pepsi was first to market with an energy drink but killed it just as the category was about to boom — a classic first-mover disadvantage made worse by premature abandonment
  • Josta was treated as a niche experiment rather than a new category, so when corporate priorities shifted it had no internal champion
  • Pepsi had no patience for the long adoption curve energy drinks needed — the category took until the mid-2000s to go mainstream, but Josta was pulled in 1999
  • The company chose focus on core brands over incubating a future growth category, ceding what became a multi-billion-dollar market to Red Bull, Monster, and others

教训

Being first is only valuable if you stay until the market arrives. Pepsi launched the first energy drink and killed it before the category existed — then watched competitors own it.

后来呢

Josta gained a dedicated fan following that persisted for years after its discontinuation. An 'Association for Josta Saving' formed online, and savejosta.org operated for over a decade. In 2023 a Pepsi Ireland subsidiary trademarked Josta again for soda and beer, though no relaunch materialised. The drink also appeared in popular culture — notably in the 2021 Disney+ series Loki. Josta is remembered as a missed opportunity: Pepsi was first to the energy drink finish line and left before the race started.
