Prada's Chinese spokespeople keep falling — Zheng Shuang lasted eight days

Named ambassador, dropped eight days later over scandal. Then Li Yifeng, then Cai Xukun. Chinese netizens call it the 'Prada curse'. 300 million views.

What happened

In January 2021, Prada named Chinese actress Zheng Shuang its brand ambassador. Eight days later, on 19 January, it ended the contract: her ex-partner had publicly accused her of abandoning two surrogate babies in the US, and a tax-evasion case would follow (she was later fined 299 million yuan). The speed of the drop set the pattern — and the joke.

The pattern repeated. Li Yifeng, named in November 2021, was dropped in September 2022 within hours of a police announcement about his conduct. In June 2023, Cai Xukun — announced as ambassador amid a fresh marketing push — faced personal-scandal allegations circulating online from 26 June; Prada severed the partnership within days. Each time, the brand's response was the same: immediate termination, no comment on the substance, a return to the product.

Chinese netizens turned the sequence into a meme — the 'Prada curse' — with related topics viewed more than 300 million times by July 2023, and sympathy running, unusually, for the brand: 'Prada spokesperson has become a high-risk post,' one commenter wrote; another suggested the house 'pay a visit to a temple'. The industry lesson was less funny: luxury's China playbook runs on traffic celebrities, and traffic celebrities carry the volatility of traffic. Prada kept buying reach and kept inheriting risk — eight days at a time.

Why it happened

  • Celebrity endorsement rents the star's audience and the star's risk together — the contract cannot separate them, whatever the morality clause says.
  • Speed of termination is the only control the brand has; Prada's eight-day drops are the market price of a strategy that prices fame, not stability.
  • The 'curse' is selection bias made visible: brands that sign the highest-traffic celebrities sign the highest-variance ones, and the variance eventually lands.

The lesson

An endorsement buys an audience and its volatility in one bundle — if the face of the brand can become a liability overnight, the brand needs a face it owns, or a plan for the morning after.
