ONEBOY said its blanket was the coolest ever — Taiwan's FTC fined it for lying
Taiwan's popular ONEBOY called its blanket the 'coolest in history' based on a Q-MAX score. The FTC found a competitor scored higher.

What happened
ONEBOY is a popular Taiwanese homewear and functional apparel brand known for its aggressive marketing, celebrity endorsements and extensive TV commercials. In 2024, the brand advertised its 'Ice Blade Blanket' (冰鋒被) with the claim 'the coolest in history' (史上最涼), citing a Q-MAX value of 0.432 as measured by SGS.
Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission investigated the claim. It compared ONEBOY's SGS test report against another brand's product and found the competitor had a Q-MAX value of 0.535 under the same test conditions — higher than ONEBOY's. The commission ruled that ONEBOY's 'coolest in history' claim was false and misleading, violating Article 21(1) of the Fair Trade Act.
ONEBOY was fined NT$50,000 (approximately US$1,550). The company issued a short apology statement in October 2024, saying it had already corrected the advertising copy. The fine was small, but the case exposed the gap between ONEBOY's marketing claims and the actual product performance.
Why it happened
- ONEBOY's 'coolest in history' claim was based on a real SGS test but could not be substantiated as superlative when another product tested higher under the same conditions
- The company relied on aggressive superlative marketing language without verifying that the claim could hold up against competitors' products
- A NT$50,000 fine is negligible for a brand of ONEBOY's size, so the false advertising had essentially no material consequence — but it eroded trust with informed consumers
The lesson
A superlative claim must be superlative against every competitor, not just against your own test. ONEBOY's blanket was cool. It was not the coolest.
