LUU VIETANH closed after 4 years — Vietnam wasn't ready to pay for handmade design
A Vietnamese handbag designer closed her brand in 2025 because customers would not pay for craftsmanship when cheaper alternatives were everywhere.

What happened
LUU VIETANH was a Vietnamese handbag brand founded by designer Lưu Việt Anh, known for handmade, creatively designed bags using unique materials. The brand operated for nearly four years, building a following among customers who appreciated craft and originality. Each bag was individually made, reflecting the designer's artistic vision.
The brand faced the same structural pressure that was closing Vietnamese fashion brands across the market: Chinese e-commerce platforms sold bags at prices that made handmade craftsmanship look extravagant. Customers could buy a trendy bag on Shopee, TikTok Shop or Shein for a fraction of the price, and most chose the cheaper option. The brand's operating costs — materials, labour for handmade production, Hanoi retail space — could not be reduced enough to compete.
On June 21, 2025, Lưu Việt Anh announced the brand was closing. She said the market was not ready to pay for the design value the brand wanted to deliver. The price competition was too fierce, and she could no longer balance operating costs against revenue. The closure was part of a broad wave of Vietnamese local fashion and accessory brands shutting down in 2024–2025.
Why it happened
- Handmade, designer bags cost significantly more to produce than the mass-produced alternatives flooding Vietnam through Chinese e-commerce platforms
- Vietnamese consumers increasingly chose price over craft — the market was not ready to pay for the design value LUU VIETANH represented
- Operating costs for materials, artisanal labour and retail space could not be reduced enough to compete with subsidised cross-border e-commerce prices
- The brand was too small to absorb losses while waiting for the market to mature — it ran out of runway before consumer preferences shifted
The lesson
A craft brand that depends on customers paying a premium for design cannot survive in a market flooded with cheap alternatives. The gap between cost and what customers pay is one no brand bridges.
Aftermath
LUU VIETANH was one of over a dozen Vietnamese local fashion and accessory brands that closed between 2024 and mid-2025. The closures were concentrated among brands that competed on design and quality rather than price, unable to match the cost structure of Chinese cross-border e-commerce platforms that dominated the affordable segment.
