What happened
HotHands is a hand-warmer brand; Kobayashi Consumer Products of Dalton, Georgia distributed its rechargeable model H163650. The white-and-orange warmers come in packs of two that join together magnetically, charge over USB-C through built-in lithium-ion batteries, and have adjustable heat and LED indicator lights.
In a joint recall with Health Canada and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced on 1 October 2026, Kobayashi said the lithium-ion battery and electrical components can overheat and ignite, posing a burn hazard. As of 14 September 2026 the company had received no reports of an incident or injury in Canada or the US.
The warmers were sold from July 2025 to August 2026, about 72 units in Canada and 77,000 in the US, and are made in China.
What it cost
About 77,000 warmers recalled (72 in Canada, 77,000 in the US) for refunds; owners must dispose of the units as hazardous battery waste.
Why it happened
The battery and electrical components inside the warmer can overheat and ignite.
The warmers hold two built-in lithium-ion batteries that charge over USB-C, the component the notice names as the ignition risk.
The warmers were sold from July 2025 to August 2026, and the recall was announced with no reported incident or injury.
The lesson
Moving a mass-market disposable heat product to a rechargeable lithium battery brings its fire risk along; a recall before any incident is cheaper than one after.
Aftermath
Owners were told to stop using the warmers and get a refund through Kobayashi's recall website, then dispose of the items so they cannot be used again. Health Canada's notice says batteries are hazardous waste and must not go in household garbage.
