What happened
On September 15, 2026, Health Canada announced the recall of Simond brand ultra-light Alpinism quickdraws — blue and purple, 11 and 17 centimeters, models #8589547 and #8589548 — marketed in Canada by Decathlon. The defect is in the riveting of the quickdraw's finger wire: the faulty assembly can break the wire finger, which in the event of a fall can break the carabiner itself — the piece of equipment whose entire job is to hold a fall.
1,078 of the affected quickdraws were sold in Canada between January 2022 and July 2026. They were manufactured in France by Decathlon SE. As of September 8, 2026, the company had not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
Decathlon told owners to immediately stop using the recalled quickdraws and to run a verification check — before any further use — at a dedicated site, simondrecallquickdraw.fandi.fr, then contact Decathlon Canada for a refund. The recall is identified as RA-82616.
What it cost
1,078 quickdraws sold in Canada from January 2022 to July 2026; refunds offered after a mandatory owner check.
Why it happened
A riveting defect in the finger wire assembly created a single point of total failure.
The failure mode compounds: the wire breaks, and the carabiner can break with it during a fall.
The affected quickdraws were on the market for four and a half years, from January 2022 to July 2026.
Owners could not see the defect, so Decathlon made an online verification step mandatory before use.
The lesson
In climbing gear, one bad rivet is a fatal flaw: quality control has to verify every load-bearing joint, because the product fails exactly when it is needed most.
Aftermath
Owners must stop using the recalled quickdraws, complete the verification check online, and contact Decathlon Canada for a refund. No incidents or injuries had been reported in Canada as of September 8, 2026.
