What happened
Sunbeam Products, the maker of the Pioneer Woman line of Crock-Pot slow cookers, recalled roughly 900,000 units, announced in March 2021 after a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission investigation. The problem sat in the pot's lid: Sunbeam said it can overheat when it comes into contact with materials such as plastic or composite containers, which can lead to fires or burns. By the time of the recall the CPSC had received more than 140 complaints of fires or burns tied to the lids, though no serious injuries were reported.
The recall targeted the 6-quart models built between July 2017 and October 2020. Named units included the Crock-Pot 6-Quart Digital Cooker (SM0810), the Crock-Pot 6-Quart Portable Cooker (SCP601P) and the Multi Cooker 6-Quart (PCML660SD), with a fuller list posted on Sunbeam's site. Owners were told to check their model number, to stop using the pot immediately if they noticed overheating or sparks, and not to use the cooker with plastic or composite containers at all.
The fix was a free replacement lid. Owners filed an online form on the Sunbeam website, waited for a prepaid label, shipped the defective lid back and received a replacement within two to three business days of receipt; a toll-free hotline (800-716-6647) covered anyone who preferred not to use the form.
What it cost
About 900,000 Crock-Pots recalled — 6-quart models built July 2017 to October 2020 — with free replacement lids for every owner.
Why it happened
The shipped design let the lid overheat when it contacted plastic or composite containers — ordinary kitchen items — putting a fire and burn risk into normal countertop use.
The failure pattern accumulated in public before any fix: the recall came only after the CPSC had logged more than 140 complaints of fires or burns.
The same lid rode on about 900,000 units across multiple 6-quart models built over three years, so the exposure scaled with the whole line instead of one batch.
The lesson
When a component can fail next to the everyday items it is sold to be used with, treat early complaint clusters as a recall trigger — replacing 900,000 lids costs far more than redesigning one.
Aftermath
Sunbeam ran the remedy as a free replacement-lid program — online form, prepaid return label, replacement lid within two to three business days, plus a hotline — and both the company and the CPSC reported no serious injuries. The recall guidance (stop using the pot if it sparks or overheats; never run it with plastic or composite containers) stayed the operative advice. A consumer recall alert published by Assurant in October 2026 was still walking owners through the same replacement steps, a sign of how long a lid recall at this scale keeps resurfacing in front of owners.
