What happened
Case-goods resource Hillsdale Furniture recalled 821 bunk beds over a potential entrapment hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported in October 2022: the space between the second rung of the bed's ladder and the lower bunk frame was wider than 3.5 inches, which poses an entrapment hazard when the mattress is removed.
The recall covered the Flynn twin-over-full bunk beds with ladders — model numbers 2184-7080B, 2311-4080B, 2184-7080BASI and 2311-4080BASI — pine beds in a white and gray finish, made in Vietnam and imported by Hillsdale Furniture LLC of Louisville, Kentucky. They sold at American Signature and Value City Furniture stores nationwide and online at valuecity.com from May 2019 through April 2022 for about $1,200.
No injuries or incidents were reported. The CPSC told consumers to block children's access to the units and contact the retailers for a free replacement ladder; Hillsdale, through Value City and American Signature, provided replacement ladders with repair instructions to all known purchasers and contacted them directly.
What it cost
821 Flynn twin-over-full bunk beds recalled; free replacement ladders to all known purchasers. No injuries or incidents were reported.
Why it happened
The ladder design left a gap beyond the 3.5-inch entrapment threshold, and it reached store floors for nearly three years.
The hazard only appears when the mattress is removed, making it easy to miss in normal use and showroom checks.
The CPSC and retailer network had to reach hundreds of scattered buyers through direct contact and online safety pages.
The lesson
A single dimension out of spec — a gap wider than a child's head-and-torso standard — can force a recall across three years of retail sales.
Aftermath
The recall was announced in October 2022, with replacement ladders offered through American Signature and Value City Furniture.
