What happened
Bissell's Steam Shot line cleans with a jet of steam. The handheld Steam Shot had already been recalled in 2024 — 3.2 million units in the US and 355,000 in Canada — because hot water or steam could escape during heating or use and burn users. That recall counted 183 incident reports and 157 minor burns.
In April 2026 the CPSC and Health Canada announced a new recall of the Steam Shot OmniReach and Steam Shot Omni steam cleaners: 1.7 million in the US and about 96,000 in Canada, sold from October 2024 through March 2026 at Target, Walmart and other stores and online. The attachments could unexpectedly detach and expel hot water or steam onto users, posing a serious burn hazard.
The new recall counted 206 reports of hot water escaping and 161 burn injuries, including a second-degree burn. Bissell's remedy was free replacement attachments — owners had to dispose of the originals and photograph the disposal to register at steamshot2026.com. The product line repeated, at a new scale, the defect that had already recalled the handheld version.
Why it happened
- Bissell reused the steam-nozzle attachment design across the Steam Shot line, and the detach-and-spray defect that recalled 3.2M units in 2024 reappeared in the OmniReach and Omni models.
- The new line reached 1.7 million units and 161 burn injuries before the 2026 recall — the repeat defect was allowed to scale because the earlier lesson was applied to the recalled product.
- Sold through Target, Walmart, Amazon and Bissell's own site, the defect multiplied across every retail channel at once.
The lesson
The defect that recalled 3.2 million Steam Shots returned in the next generation — 1.7 million units and 161 burns. A recall fixes the product, not the design; the design fix is the only thing.
Aftermath
The April 2026 recall covered Steam Shot OmniReach and Steam Shot Omni models in the 4155 and 4171 series, sold in the US from October 2024 through March 2026 at Target, Walmart, department and home goods stores, and online at BISSELL.com, Amazon.com and HSN.com, plus about 96,000 units in Canada. Bissell offered free replacement attachments to owners who registered at steamshot2026.com and uploaded a photo showing the original attachments disposed of. The CPSC noted 206 reports of hot water or steam escaping and 161 burn injuries, including a second-degree burn.
