XPeng recalled 47,490 P7s after water got into the steering assist motor connector

A harness connector that let in water could short the steering assist motor; XPeng replaced the steering gear assembly on 47,490 P7s for free

What happened

On 12 September 2025, China's State Administration for Market Regulation published recall S2025M0142V: XPeng was recalling 47,490 P7 sedans built between 20 August 2024 and 27 April 2025. The defect was in the steering assist system — water could enter the sensor harness connector of the steering assist motor, short the terminals, and cause steering assist to fail.

The recall, effective 15 September 2025, followed owner complaints about steering assist failures in service channels. XPeng's fix was a free replacement of the steering gear assembly at authorised service centres, with the connector sealing corrected on the replacement part. Owners were notified through in-car systems, the app, and registered phone numbers.

The P7 was XPeng's flagship sedan and the model that built the brand's reputation in China's new-energy market. A recall covering nearly 50,000 cars from a single production window pointed at a supplier or assembly-line sealing step rather than a design flaw in the platform itself, but for a company then pushing a sales recovery, the timing put the recall in front of every potential buyer's review of the car.

No crashes or injuries from the defect were reported in the recall filing. The failure mode — a connector that behaved in the field differently than it did in validation — is the classic shape of an engineering escape that only surfaces after tens of thousands of units are on the road.

Why it happened

  • The sensor harness connector sat where water could reach it, and its sealing was not proven against real exposure — the gap between validation conditions and the water and heat a car lives in.
  • Steering assist failure is safety-relevant, so the escape had to become a full recall rather than a software patch — the engineering choice upstream set the cost of the response downstream.
  • XPeng was mid-recovery and selling on build quality; a recall of the flagship model handed its competitors the one line of attack its marketing could not answer.

The lesson

A connector that survives validation but not real-world water is a recall with a model name attached — environmental testing must copy the worst road, not the lab, or the brand pays the difference.

Aftermath

XPeng carried out the recall from 15 September 2025, replacing steering gear assemblies at no cost to owners. The defect was contained to the specified production window, and XPeng's sales recovery continued through the second half of 2025.
