Nikolaus Otto pushed his chief engineer out over a dispute — and lost the automobile
Otto forced Gottlieb Daimler out of Deutz over an engine dispute. Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach left, and built the engine that made the car.

传闻流传很广,但拿不出可查的文件。当成教训看,别当成事实。
对今天的意义
Before forcing out the engineer who disagrees with the roadmap, ask what they could build with the severance and the knowledge — a founder's authority to win the argument is not authority over what the loser does next.
怎么回事
Gottlieb Daimler joined Deutz Gasmotorenfabrik as technical director in 1872, bringing designer Wilhelm Maybach with him. Nikolaus Otto, the company's founder, had already made his name with the stationary Otto-cycle gas engine — slow, heavy, built to run a factory floor, not to move. Daimler wanted to go the other way: smaller, lighter, faster-spinning engines that could eventually power a vehicle.
The two men could not agree on what the company should build next, and the disagreement hardened into something personal. Accounts differ on the exact shape of it — some point to Otto's resentment of Daimler's university training against his own self-taught background, some to a fight over whose name went on which patent, some simply to years of clashing over engine design with no resolution in sight. What every retelling agrees on is the outcome: Daimler was pushed out, and Maybach followed him within months.
The date itself is told two ways — 1880 in some corporate histories, 1882 in others — which is itself the tell of a story that was never written down as it happened, only reconstructed afterward from memory and company lore. Daimler took his severance, a few hundred thousand gold marks in Deutz shares, and built a workshop in the garden of a house in Cannstatt. The neighbours reported the strange noises to the police, who raided the property looking for counterfeiters and found engines instead.
Those engines became the high-speed petrol motor that Daimler and Maybach fitted to a wooden bicycle in 1885 — the first motorcycle — and then to a carriage. Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, the company they founded, became one of the two ancestors of Mercedes-Benz. Deutz kept making stationary industrial engines, which is still its business today, and stayed out of the car industry Otto's own chief engineer had just invented down the road.
为什么会这样
- Otto and Daimler disagreed for years on the company's direction: stationary factory engines versus small, fast engines built for movement
- Personal friction compounded the technical dispute — retellings cite resentment over Daimler's education and disputes over patent credit
- Otto had the authority to force the issue and used it, without securing what Daimler and Maybach would do with the knowledge they took with them
- No non-compete or ongoing collaboration followed the split — the two men who understood the engine best became direct competitors
教训
Forcing out the person who disagrees with your product roadmap does not end the disagreement — it funds an alternative. Daimler's severance built the workshop that out-competed the firm that paid it.
后来呢
Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft became one of the two companies that merged in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz, maker of Mercedes-Benz. Deutz AG still builds industrial and stationary engines today and never became a carmaker. Otto died in 1891, a year after Daimler's new company was formally founded.
