Yao Yao Suancai Yu quits Hong Kong; mainland sour-fish chain fully gone by March 2026

What happened

姚姚酸菜魚, a mainland Chinese sour-fish (suancai yu) restaurant chain, entered Hong Kong in 2022 as part of a wave of mainland dining brands crossing the border. Within four years the expansion unravelled: its last Hong Kong store, at Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui, closed on 15 March 2026, completing the brand's full withdrawal from the market.

The chain had opened multiple locations across the territory on the strength of its mainland popularity, betting that the same sour-fish formula would travel. The exit came quietly, with no large public announcement — customers found stores closed.

The pull-out is one more data point in the broader 2025–2026 shakeout of mainland restaurant brands in Hong Kong, where high rents, thin margins and a dining market reshaped by cross-border habits made a chain-scale footprint hard to sustain.

Why it happened

  • A mainland chain's brand recognition did not transfer easily into Hong Kong loyalty, leaving the stores reliant on a novelty that faded
  • Commercial rents and operating costs in prime Hong Kong locations outweighed the margins a single-dish sour-fish format could generate
  • The four-year arc from entry to full withdrawal shows the expansion was not backed by a model that could survive the market's cost structure
  • Withdrawing quietly rather than restructuring suggests the operator judged the Hong Kong business unrecoverable at any reasonable investment

The lesson

A mainland chain can open in Hong Kong on the strength of home-market hype, but four years is enough to learn that rents and local dining habits will not carry a single-dish formula.
