A more-than-30-year 冬菇亭 cook stall in Hong Kong announced its closure for 19 August 2026, citing 北上消費 — diners spending across the border.

What happened
利豐打冷小廚, a cook-stall (冬菇亭) daa laan specialising in Chiu Chow-style cold dishes, had served its Hong Kong neighbourhood for more than 30 years. On 31 July 2026 it announced it would close for good on 19 August 2026.
The owner pointed directly at 北上消費 — the rising trend of Hong Kong residents spending weekends and money in mainland China — as the reason regulars had stopped coming. A stall that had once fed thousands made the difficult call that the trade would not return.
Its closure joins a long run of Hong Kong cook stalls and family restaurants shutting through 2025–2026, hit by the same cross-border spending shift, rising rents and a hospitality workforce that has thinned out.
Why it happened
