What happened
銀都冰室, a bingsut (Hong Kong-style café) in Wah Fu Estate, had served its community for 58 years since opening in 1968. In July 2026 it closed for good, joining a long and growing list of heritage Hong Kong cafés lost to the same pressures.
The shop had won a 2014 award for its Hong Kong-style milk tea — a recognition that made it a small local landmark on the island's south side, known as much for its community as for its drink.
Its closure is one more loss in the 2025–2026 wave of traditional bingsut and cha chaan teng shutting across Hong Kong, squeezed by rents, a thinning hospitality workforce and consumer spending drifting toward the mainland.
Why it happened
- Fifty-eight years of community goodwill could not offset rising rents and operating costs in a shrinking catering trade
- Hong Kong-style milk tea, however award-winning, did not generate enough margin to carry a single-location bingsut
- Cross-border spending and a thinned hospitality workforce cut the footfall such cafés depended on
- A heritage café with no chain backing had no way to absorb a market that kept repricing its neighbourhood
