What happened
In September 2024 Health Canada announced a recall of the Kilimanjaro E-Bike Rack Hitch Mounted Platform Carrier, sold exclusively at Costco stores in Canada. Stress at critical connection points, the notice said, can cause cracks that worsen through cyclic fatigue — repeated loading and unloading progressively weakening the material — until structural failure lets a bicycle detach during transport and become a road hazard, 'increasing the risk of a crash'.
Two models were covered, sold from March 2023 to September 2023 and from March 2024 to August 2024 — 6,660 units in all, distributed by Alltrade Tools LLC of California and manufactured by Ningbo Shenqian Metalware in China. As of 20 September 2024 the company had received 16 reports of incidents in Canada, with no injuries. Buyers were told to stop using the racks and return them to Costco for a full refund.
What it cost
6,660 racks sold exclusively at Costco Canada recalled with full refunds; 16 incident reports in Canada, no injuries.
Why it happened
E-bikes load a hitch-mounted rack well beyond what lighter bicycles demand, and the cracks appeared at the rack's critical joints.
Cyclic fatigue means every trip weakens the rack further, so a rack that held on one drive is no proof it holds on the next.
The failure mode is a bicycle detaching on a public road — the hazard falls on everyone behind the car, not just the buyer.
The lesson
E-bikes load a hitch rack far harder than the road bikes older carriers were designed around — cyclic fatigue at real loads has to be tested before a mounting rack meets highway speeds.
Aftermath
The racks were pulled from Costco Canada with full refunds offered; 16 cracked-rack reports were on file and no injuries had been reported at announcement. The recall remains posted as identification number RA-76052, covering both model years sold from March 2023.
