Musk bought Twitter and told advertisers 'go fuck yourself' — they left

After Musk's takeover, GM, IBM, Apple and Disney paused ads. At the DealBook Summit, he told advertisers to 'go fuck yourself.'

X Corp (formerly Twitter)

What happened

After Elon Musk acquired Twitter on October 28, 2022, he promised advertisers the platform would not become a 'free-for-all hellscape.' Within weeks, General Motors, Audi, General Mills, Mondelez, Pfizer, REI, Volkswagen Group and others had paused advertising. Three major holding companies — IPG Mediabrands, Omnicom Media Group, and GroupM — advised their clients to stop buying Twitter ads entirely.

The exodus accelerated through 2023 as Musk loosened content moderation, reinstated banned accounts, and amplified conspiracy theories. On November 24, 2023, the European Union halted all advertisements on X, citing an 'alarming increase' in hate speech and misinformation. IBM, Apple, Disney, and Comcast paused spending after a Media Matters report showed their ads appearing next to pro-Nazi content.

At the New York Times DealBook Summit on November 29, 2023, Musk was asked about advertisers who left. He said: 'Go fuck yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is.' He specifically called out Disney CEO Bob Iger. X responded by suing Media Matters for America and the Center for Countering Digital Hate — the watchdogs that had reported on the platform's hate speech problem. By October 2024, Fidelity estimated X's valuation had declined 79% from the $44 billion purchase price.

Why it happened

  • The 'hellscape' promise was broken immediately: Musk promised no free-for-all — then reinstated banned accounts and loosened moderation, making the promise worthless.
  • The DealBook quote was the exclamation point: telling advertisers to 'go fuck yourself' confirmed the owner saw them as adversaries — no brand runs ads there after that.
  • The Media Matters lawsuit was misdirection: suing the watchdogs that reported hate speech did not address the hate speech — it told advertisers the priority was silencing critics.
  • The EU halt was the institutional signal: when the European Commission stops advertising and advises all EU institutions to do the same, brand safety is a directive.

The lesson

When advertisers pause spending and your response is 'go fuck yourself,' you have chosen ideology over revenue. Suing the watchdogs does not fix the problem — it tells advertisers you will not change.
