What happened
On September 9, 2026, Health Canada announced the recall of the Woodure toddler kitchen step stool, model WD1357 — a plywood tower stool, 45.7 by 42.9 by 87.9 centimeters, that lets small children stand at kitchen counter height. The hazard notice states the stool can collapse or tip over while in use, and that a child's torso can fit through the openings on the front and back sides, posing risks of serious injury and death from tip-over, fall and entrapment.
The stool was sold in Canada from July 2024 to June 2026 — about 2,000 units — imported by FIPET INC of Sheridan, Wyoming, and manufactured in China. As of September 6, 2026, the company had received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
The remedy is a free repair kit from Woodure containing protective nets, stabilizing feet and installation instructions; consumers are told to stop using the stool immediately and keep it away from children until it is installed. Health Canada warns that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits redistributing, selling or even giving away a recalled product.
What it cost
2,000 units sold in Canada from July 2024 to June 2026; free repair kits with protective nets and stabilizing feet; no injuries reported.
Why it happened
Openings on the front and back were large enough for a child's torso — an entrapment hazard built into the design.
The stool could collapse or tip while in use, a structural failure mode for a product meant to hold a standing child.
The product spent two years on the Canadian market, from July 2024 to June 2026, before the recall.
The design passed no visible safeguard against the way toddlers actually use kitchen towers: climbing and wobbling.
The lesson
A children's product has to be tested against the ways children actually use it — climbing, leaning, squeezing through — not just the way adults do.
Aftermath
Consumers must install the repair kit before returning the stool to use; no incidents or injuries had been reported in Canada as of September 6, 2026. The recall (identification RA-82602) is also posted on the OECD Global Portal on Product Recalls.
