UBSKIN (优贝施) was founded in 2010 and became China's pioneer of imported cosmeceutical (药妆) retail, aggregating over 200 global skincare brands. At its peak, the chain operated more than 200 stores across 30+ provinces and cities, using a franchise-heavy model with direct-operated flagships.

In November 2018, UBSKIN announced it would stop accepting new franchisees from 2019 and pivot toward online channels. The transition proved unsuccessful. The 2020 pandemic dealt a further blow to its remaining physical stores, and the online pivot failed to generate meaningful replacement revenue.

On 26 May 2026, the Shanghai Third Intermediate People's Court accepted a bankruptcy case against Shanghai UBSKIN Cosmetics Co., Ltd. The company was confirmed insolvent with debts of ¥151,800 and insufficient assets to cover even bankruptcy costs. On 7 August 2026, the court declared UBSKIN bankrupt and terminated proceedings.

The case illustrated the fate of early-generation specialty beauty retailers in China: the imported-cosmeceutical niche that UBSKIN pioneered was eventually served more efficiently by cross-border e-commerce platforms (Tmall Global, JD Worldwide) and newer beauty collection stores (THE COLORIST, WOW COLOUR), leaving the brick-and-mortar specialist with no defensible position.

Pivoted online too late; cross-border e-commerce had commoditised the niche, leaving no defensible position and debts of ¥151,800.

UBSKIN's franchise-heavy model scaled quickly but left the chain unable to control quality or adapt when the market shifted — franchisees bore the pain while headquarters lacked the agility to pivot.

The 2019 decision to stop franchising and pivot online came too late — cross-border e-commerce platforms had already captured the imported-skincare customer by the time UBSKIN tried to move digital.

COVID-19 in 2020 accelerated the decline of physical beauty retail, hitting UBSKIN's remaining stores at the worst possible moment in its transition.

The imported-cosmeceutical niche UBSKIN pioneered was commoditised by Tmall Global, JD Worldwide, and new-format beauty collection stores — the specialist's value proposition evaporated.

Pioneering a niche is only valuable until platforms commoditise it — the specialist who built the category often has the least agility to survive when e-commerce takes over.

UBSKIN was declared bankrupt on 7 August 2026 with assets insufficient to cover bankruptcy costs. The case became a reference point for the vulnerability of specialty brick-and-mortar retail in China's beauty market, where cross-border e-commerce and new-format collection stores have displaced traditional importers.
