The Point Pizza grew to 7 stores mid-pandemic, then closed every Hong Kong outlet in 2026
Home-grown pizza chain The Point peaked at 7 stores after expanding during the pandemic, then exited Hong Kong in May 2026.

What happened
The Point Pizza & Pasta was a home-grown Hong Kong pizza chain founded in 2014 in Causeway Bay by Cheung Pui-sau, a former investment banker. It built a following on creative handmade pizzas and pasta, and by its peak operated seven branches across Tsim Sha Tsui, Tseung Kwan O, Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi, Lohas Park, Tai Kok Tsui and Kowloon Bay.
The chain kept expanding at the worst possible moment. During the pandemic it opened three new stores in Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and Kowloon Bay, betting that the casual-dining market would reward the extra footprint. Instead, Hong Kong's restaurant sector slid into a structural downturn driven by cross-border consumption, as residents increasingly shopped and dined across the border. Restaurant revenue fell 7.2 per cent in Q1 2026 versus Q1 2018; Cantonese restaurants were down 16 per cent, bars 22 per cent.
On 1 April 2026 the brand announced on Threads and Instagram that its last branch, at The ONE in Tsim Sha Tsui, would close in mid-May — ending the 12-year run. It offered an '88 farewell' 12 per cent discount during the wind-down. The closure followed that of fellow pizza chain Pizza Box, underscoring how brutal the casual-dining sector had become: a debt-free, well-regarded home-grown brand could not make its rent on a shrinking pool of customers.
Why it happened
- The Point expanded three stores during the pandemic, adding rent and headcount into a market about to contract.
- Cross-border consumption drained foot traffic from Hong Kong's urban restaurant sector from 2023 onward.
- The casual-dining segment was squeezed hardest by the downturn, with pizza chains Pizza Box and The Point both exiting.
- As a home-grown chain with no multinational parent, The Point had no deep pockets to ride out the decline.
The lesson
Expanding into a contracting market multiplies fixed costs you cannot escape. For a home-grown brand with no parent's balance sheet, growth during a downturn is a bet on demand that never arrives.
