Style sold Paul Smith bags to Japan's depato for 100 years — then the channel died
Founded 1923; peaked at ¥9B+ distributing licensed Paul Smith, Mila Schön and HANAE MORI bags to department stores. Channel collapsed; August 2025 bankruptcy
Style Co., Ltd. (株式会社スタイル) · 2025-08-19
What happened
Style was founded in Tokyo in 1923 and incorporated in 1992. For decades it operated as a specialised trading company (専門商社) for bags and leather goods, handling everything from product planning to sales. Its licensed ranges for Paul Smith, Mila Schön, Vivienne Westwood and HANAE MORI were sold in department stores across Japan, and at its peak in the fiscal year ending March 2018 the company recorded annual revenue above ¥9 billion.
The decline was channel-driven. Style's core customers were department stores, and the pandemic accelerated a trend already underway: store closures, shortened hours and the shift to e-commerce hollowed out the wholesale pipeline. Revenue fell to about ¥5.86 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2024, and the company posted a net loss of roughly ¥352 million.
On 19 August 2025 Style ceased operations and filed for self-bankruptcy at the Tokyo District Court. Its online shop, STYLE SHOP, displayed a closure notice dated the same day. Teikoku Databank reported the filing.
Why it happened
- The entire distribution model depended on department stores — a channel in structural decline as e-commerce and fast fashion diverted footfall.
- COVID-19 lockdowns and shortened trading hours collapsed department-store traffic; the recovery never came for wholesale leather-goods distributors.
- A century-old wholesaler could not pivot quickly enough to direct-to-consumer e-commerce that would have replaced the lost department-store channel.
The lesson
Style distributed Paul Smith and Westwood bags to Japanese department stores for 100 years. When the channel collapsed, a wholesale model with no DTC alternative went with it.
Aftermath
Style filed for self-bankruptcy at Tokyo District Court on 19 August 2025; its STYLE SHOP online store closed the same day. The company's licensed brand partnerships, including Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood bag distribution, ceased.
