Daimaru Shimonoseki, western Yamaguchi's last department store, closes August 2027

What happened

Daimaru Shimonoseki, the only department store in western Yamaguchi, will close on 31 August 2027, ending a 77-year run. Daimaru Matsuzakaya announced the decision on 30 June 2026 at Shimonoseki city hall. The store opened in 1950 in a tie-up between Taiyo Fishery and Daimaru, moved in 1959, and in 1977 became a core tenant of Seamall Shimonoseki beside JR Shimonoseki station.

The numbers tell the decline: total sales peaked at ¥32.3 billion in fiscal 1992, fell to ¥13.3 billion by fiscal 2019 and ¥6.9 billion in fiscal 2025 — halved in six years — while the store posted final losses for seven consecutive years. About 100 employees work there, with roughly 150 shops inside.

The company tried renewals rather than exit: a 2014 renovation tied to the new Ripie station building, 2017 luxury cosmetics renewals (Chanel, Dior, Shiseido, L'Occitane) and a Hands franchise. Managing director Motoshi Narita admitted the company 'could not stop the revenue decline'. Rivals included the Izumi Yume City mall, which opened in 2009.

Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi's largest city, will lose its department store; after the closure only Yamaguchi Itsutsuji in the prefectural capital remains among Japan Department Stores Association members. The mayor said he was 'greatly shocked' and would prioritise protecting jobs; the store's future use is undecided.

Why it happened

  • Tolerated seven years of final losses: the parent group kept funding a structurally declining store, and the exit decision came only after sales had halved in six years.
  • Renewals fought the wrong battle: luxury cosmetics and franchise formats could not compete with newer malls and a rebuilt station district in a shrinking regional city.
  • A 23,000-square-metre store had no market left: depopulation and competition had cut sales to ¥6.9 billion, a fifth of the 1992 peak, and no tenant mix could close the gap.
What it costClosed after 77 years; sales ¥6.9B, down from ¥32.3B peakcostly

The lesson

A parent group can fund losses for years, but renewals cannot save a regional store whose market has gone: seven loss years later the exit was unavoidable.

Aftermath

Daimaru Shimonoseki will keep trading normally until 31 August 2027. Shimonoseki city has set up a response committee focused on preserving employment; managing director Narita said the roughly 100 employees would not be dismissed. The closure leaves a large vacant core space in Seamall Shimonoseki and removes the department store from Yamaguchi's largest city; only Yamaguchi Itsutsuji in the prefectural capital remains among Japan Department Stores Association members. The store's future use is undecided, and the city continues its Shimonoseki station front renewal plan.
