What happened
The Conran Shop opened its first Japanese store in 1994 in Living Design Center OZONE inside Shinjuku Park Tower — years before 'lifestyle' became a retail buzzword, it spent 33 years proposing furniture, lighting, interior items and gifts around the question of how to live and spend one's time.
On 13 July 2026 the company announced that the Shinjuku store will close in spring 2027, with no reason given. The countdown is being staged as programming: an archive event from 18 July looking back the store's history through 365 items — classics, young designers' products, originals and crafts — plus weekend '10% POINT WEEKEND' campaigns until the final day.
It is the second contraction of the brand's Japan footprint: the Kyoto store, open since 2015, closed on 29 February 2020. The newer Azabudai Hills store continues to operate; the store that introduced the chain to Japan does not.
Why it happened
- No reason was announced — the closure came as programming, an archive sale rather than an explanation.
- The store sat inside a design centre rather than a shopping destination; its anchor role belonged to a 1990s idea of how design is sold.
- The brand had already pulled back once — Kyoto in 2020 — so Shinjuku is a second retreat, not an isolated loss.
