What happened
In September 2026 Snow Peak voluntarily recalled its Takibi Fireplace Propane Insert with Lava Rocks (model ST-332-US), and on 8 October 2026 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission posted recall notice 27-021 covering about 100 sets sold online at snowpeak.com in July 2026 for about US$350. The accessory adapts the Pack & Carry Fireplace L and XL to burn propane instead of wood or charcoal, and includes lava rocks plus a detachable hose with a gas-flow regulator and flame-control knob.
The hazard: the lava rocks can ignite and explode when heated, posing burn and fire hazards that could cause serious injury or death. CPSC recorded one incident of exploding rocks with minor property damage and no reported injuries. The base Pack & Carry fireplace itself is not recalled. The sets were imported by Snow Peak USA Inc. of Portland, Oregon, and manufactured in China and Taiwan.
Snow Peak is offering a full refund with a prepaid shipping label for both insert and rocks; customers who prefer can keep the insert and receive replacement lava rocks, and must not use the insert until the safe rocks arrive. Recalled rocks are to be disposed of under local and state ordinances.
What it cost
About 100 units recalled at about US$350 each, with full refunds or free replacement rocks and prepaid returns.
Why it happened
The lava rocks in the propane conversion kit could ignite and explode when heated — a failure mode the launch testing did not catch.
The accessory had been on sale only since July 2026 before the first reported incident, and Snow Peak moved to a voluntary recall by September.
The company told buyers to stop using the insert immediately and built a refund-or-replacement remedy with prepaid return shipping.
The lesson
An accessory that changes how a proven product burns needs its own safety validation — new fuel paths can make decorative parts hazardous.
Aftermath
The CPSC notice of 8 October 2026 restated the voluntary recall and directed consumers to the company's recall page and phone line. No injuries had been reported, and Snow Peak kept offering full refunds or replacement lava rocks, telling owners not to use the insert until safe rocks arrived.
