Samsung's washing machines threw off their lids — 2.8 million owners caught out

Samsung's fast-spin washers flung their lids off mid-cycle. 2.8 million machines recalled after 733 lid incidents and nine injuries.

What happened

Samsung's top-load washing machines were marketed around an unusually fast spin cycle that cleaned clothes faster and left them drier. From 2011, owners began reporting a dangerous failure: the lid would detach during the spin and fly across the room. Samsung responded with staged repair programs and firmware updates, treating the reports as isolated incidents.

By November 2016 the reports had reached 733 incidents, including nine injuries. The CPSC and Samsung announced a recall of 2.8 million top-load washers across 34 models, sold since March 2011. Owners were offered three remedies: a free reinforcement kit that kept the lid in place, a replacement lid, or a refund. Until the fix arrived, Samsung advised using the delicate cycle, which spins more slowly.

The recall landed two months after Samsung's Note 7 phone recall, making 2016 the year Samsung's aggressive engineering collided with reality twice. Both failures shared a pattern: a headline performance feature pushed to market without enough validation of what happens when the design is stressed. Samsung's US appliance business recovered, but the washers joined the Note 7 as the year's twin recalls.

Why it happened

The lesson

Pushing spin speed as a headline feature skipped stress-testing the lid. Years of patch repairs followed, then a 2.8M-unit forced recall — fix the design, not the symptoms, before the regulator does.

Aftermath

The recall covered machines sold from March 2011 through November 2016. Samsung and the CPSC offered a free reinforcement kit, a replacement lid, or a refund, and Samsung issued firmware updates that shortened the spin cycle. Samsung said it had no reports of injuries from machines that received the reinforcement. The episode closed Samsung's worst year for US product safety, and the company responded with slower product cycles and tighter internal safety review.
