Panasonic recalled 11,480 toaster ovens over an exposed power cord

What happened
Panasonic's NB-G200 electric toaster oven — a stainless-steel model with the temperature knob on the underside — sold on Amazon, Costco.com, Panasonic.com and other online retailers nationwide from October 2024 through April 2026 for about $170.
The power cord's protective fiberglass sleeve failed to fully cover the wire's insulation, leaving the cord able to short-circuit or overheat — a shock and fire hazard sitting on more than 11,000 US kitchen counters.
Panasonic received four consumer reports of tripped circuit breakers or outlets and one report that the oven stopped working; no fires or injuries were reported. On July 16, 2026, Panasonic and the CPSC recalled all roughly 11,480 units, telling owners to stop using the oven immediately and contact Panasonic for a full refund.
Why it happened
- A fiberglass sleeve meant to insulate the power cord didn't fully cover it, and the gap wasn't caught before 11,480 units shipped over an 18-month sales run.
- The defect surfaced through consumer complaints about tripped breakers, not through Panasonic's own pre-market testing.
The lesson
Four tripped breakers were the warning Panasonic got before a fire was. A recall that starts from consumer complaints rather than testing is one that already missed the defect once.
Aftermath
Panasonic and the CPSC recalled the NB-G200 on July 16, 2026 and offered full refunds; no fires or injuries were confirmed. Panasonic did not disclose why its own quality testing had not caught the insulation gap during the product's 18 months on sale.
