What happened
Frigidaire gas ranges, made by Electrolux Group, could suffer delayed ignition — the burner failing to light immediately when turned on. In that gap, gas kept flowing into the oven cavity before finally igniting, producing a sudden burst of flame or a small explosion instead of a steady, controlled flame.
Electrolux received at least 62 reports of delayed ignition, including 30 burn injuries, along with damage to the appliance and surrounding kitchen surfaces from the resulting flame bursts.
On March 19, 2026, the CPSC announced a recall covering more than 174,000 gas ranges sold in the US, with thousands more in Canada. Electrolux offered a remedy to affected owners to correct the ignition delay.
Why it happened
- A gas range's ignition system exists to light fuel immediately and stop unburned gas from building up — this one didn't, and the failure mode was a small explosion, not a simple no-light.
- 62 reports of the same delayed-ignition pattern, and 30 burns among them, accumulated across years of sales before the recall addressed it.
The lesson
A gas appliance that delays ignition doesn't fail safely — the unburned gas has to go somewhere, and in this case it went into a burst of flame that burned 30 people before the range was recalled.
Aftermath
