PRO-Keds' only Japanese flagship closed after 21 months

PRO-Keds opened its first and only Japanese flagship in Harajuku in April 2024. On 15 January 2026 it closed — the brand moves into other retailers' corners.

What happened

PRO-Keds was born in 1949 as the pro-sports line of American sneaker maker Keds, and in Japan became a staple of the 1990s ura-Harajuku streetwear wave on models like the Royal America Hi and the Super. In April 2024 the brand opened its first Japanese flagship: a store on Meiji-dori in Jingumae with an exterior styled on the PRO-Keds shoebox in 'PRO-Keds Blue'.

The flagship lasted twenty-one months. On 15 January 2026 the Harajuku store closed, with a closing sale running a flat ten percent off everything until the final day. No reason was announced.

The brand is not leaving Japan — it is leaving having its own door. PRO-Keds products now sell from a corner at Berwick Marunouchi in the Meiji Yasuda Life Building; the only store carrying the brand's own name is gone.

Why it happened

  • A flagship is fixed rent against demand it must create itself; twenty-one months was the whole of the experiment.
  • Moving into another retailer's corners passes the rent and staffing risk to the host — an admission that the standalone store did not pay.
  • Nineties nostalgia opened the store; nostalgia does not renew leases.

The lesson

A first flagship is a bet, and 21 months is a verdict. PRO-Keds opened its only Japanese flagship in Harajuku and closed it — the brand now sells from corners in someone else's stores.

Aftermath

PRO-Keds is now stocked at Berwick Marunouchi (Meiji Yasuda Life Building, MY Plaza 1F), and the brand's Japanese operation continues without a shop of its own; the Jingumae unit was left to find its next tenant.
