What happened
In early 2022 Phil Mickelson was still among the most valuable faces in golf advertising, earning an estimated $40 million a year in endorsements. Much of it sat with long-running partners: KPMG sponsored him since 2008, Workday since 2017. Then excerpts from Alan Shipnuck's biography went public, carrying his dismissal of the PGA Tour as a 'dictatorship' and his admission he would deal with the 'scary motherf---ers' running Saudi Arabia — a nod to the killing of Jamal Khashoggi — to gain leverage over the Tour while steering toward LIV Golf.
The sponsors moved within days. On 22 February KPMG announced it had 'concluded its relationship' with Mickelson and stripped his content from its site. On 23 February Heineken's Amstel Light ended its partnership. On 25 February Workday said it would not renew a sponsorship ending that March, and Callaway said it was pausing and would re-evaluate — Mickelson's comments 'in no way reflect our values'. He apologised publicly and told partners they could pause or end the deals.
He then sat out professional golf for four months, skipping the Masters and the PGA Championship, before joining LIV Golf in June 2022 on a contract reported to be worth well over $100 million. The sponsors that had walked were not part of the deal — the price of betting an endorsement programme on one outspoken face was the quiet end of relationships built over 14 and 5 years.
What it cost
KPMG (14 yrs) and Workday (5 yrs) dropped him in four days; Callaway paused. The exits compressed because staying silent read as endorsement.
Why it happened
The asset was one hugely outspoken face, and the leaked comments named the very funders of the league he was about to join, leaving sponsors nothing to explain away.
Once KPMG, the longest-serving partner, walked, the rest had to follow: staying silent read as endorsement, so the exits compressed into four days.
A trust firm and an enterprise-software brand cannot keep a face praising a dictatorship over its own employer.
Saudi money inverted the geometry: sponsors were paying him to reject the league they were funding.
The lesson
Mickelson kept KPMG for 14 years and Workday for 5, then lost both in under a week when one opinion about the league's Saudi backers went public. An endorsement bets on what a person will keep saying.
Aftermath
Mickelson apologised, sat out four months, and in June 2022 joined LIV Golf on a reported nine-figure deal. Callaway later resumed its partnership. The episode became the reference point for endorser-voice risk: a brand advertising through a person is buying their future statements, not just their past record.
