Microsoft stopped making the HoloLens 2 in 2024 with no successor — the $3,500 enterprise AR headset outlived its ambition, support ends December 2027.

What happened
Microsoft launched the HoloLens 2 at $3,500 in 2019 as the sequel to the headset that had redefined augmented reality, promising holograms on factory floors, in operating rooms and on military helmets — an enterprise pitch that never needed the consumer market's approval.
The category never grew into the bet: after the 2022 departure of HoloLens creator Alex Kipman and repeated layoffs in the mixed-reality teams, Microsoft confirmed on 1 October 2024 that it was no longer producing the HoloLens 2, told customers it was the 'last time to buy', and set security-update support to end on 31 December 2027. No HoloLens 3 was ever announced; plans were scrapped.
Microsoft kept only the military thread: the IVAS program with the US Army — a HoloLens-derived combat headset now co-developed with Anduril — continued, with a contract worth up to $21.9 billion over a decade. The civilian headset that defined the category ended with a press statement and a support date.
Why it happened
- At $3,500 with a closed ecosystem, the HoloLens 2 was an enterprise product without an enterprise market — the factory-floor demo never became the order pipeline.
- Microsoft's AR strategy swung between consumer dreams and military contracts, so the headset team never got the decade of consistent investment the category needed to grow.
- The quiet ending — no successor, no farewell event — was the decision: Microsoft kept the IVAS contract and let the product line expire rather than fund a third generation.
The lesson
Microsoft sold a $3,500 AR headset to no one in particular and let it die with no successor. When the only customer left is the government, the product is a program, not a market.
Aftermath
The HoloLens 2's last units sold through into 2025, and security support ends on 31 December 2027; original HoloLens support had already ended. Microsoft's mixed-reality hardware era closed without a civilian successor while IVAS — the military helmet derived from HoloLens — advanced with Anduril under a contract worth up to $21.9 billion over a decade. The headset that invented the category became the cautionary tale for enterprise-first AR pricing.
