MAC erased its ambassador one day after she was cleared

Ju Jingyi was MAC's ambassador for ten months; her former agency filed a tax complaint, and MAC wiped her materials — even after authorities found nothing.

What happened

Actress Ju Jingyi was announced on 10 June 2025 as MAC's 'glow ambassador' in China. On 31 March 2026, her former agency Siba Media was reported to have filed a named complaint alleging tax evasion. The same day, MAC's official Weibo quietly set every post about her to 'visible to itself' — the materials hidden before anyone had established anything.

The accusation collapsed within a day. Her studio said she had completed the tax inspection and that 'no illegal conduct exists'; the tax authorities then announced they had found no tax issues. On 2 April, MAC deleted her materials across every platform anyway — the ambassadorship announcement, the campaign posters, the event videos — with no statement and no explanation. On 3 April the hidden posts reappeared, all marked 'edited', but the core campaign materials were not restored.

Neither side ever explained. Ju Jingyi's accounts simply kept promoting her new drama, and MAC never issued a single word. Commentators noted the precise timing had turned what could have been a routine, quiet contract adjustment into a credibility crisis of its own — a cut executed the day after an official clearance reads as panic rather than prudence, and the brand paid for the very rumour it was trying to escape.

Why it happened

  • The brand priced the rumour, not the official finding: by the time MAC moved, the tax authorities had already announced nothing was found, yet the deletion proceeded
  • Silence was the loudest part: with no statement, the deletion itself became the statement, and every post restored with an 'edited' mark documented the indecision
  • A mid-contract cut against a cleared ambassador destroys value on both sides — the campaign investment is written off and the brand is seen as cutting for cover

The lesson

Cutting an ambassador after an official clearance is worse than staying: the deletion reads as panic, the silence as guilt, and the brand pays for the rumour it was escaping.

Aftermath

MAC issued no statement at any point; Ju Jingyi's studio stayed silent on the brand and kept promoting her drama. The partnership, announced in June 2025, ended without acknowledgement by either side after less than ten months. Chinese media counted the episode among 2026's most botched celebrity exits — a case where the risk management created more reputational cost than the risk itself.
