What happened
On March 26, 2026, Logitech China's official Douyin account 'Logitech G Flagship Store' posted a promotional video for the GPW3 mouse. The caption read: 'When I cut the price, you still come running like a dog.' The ad was intended to promote a price reduction, but consumers read it as an insult — the brand was comparing its own customers to dogs who would come running for a discount.
The backlash was immediate and massive. The topic 'Logitech insults consumers' trended on Weibo for over 13 hours, accumulating more than 53 million views. Over 2,000 complaints were filed on the platform. Consumers called the ad 'disgusting' and accused the brand of contempt for its own customer base.
Logitech China issued an apology the same night, claiming the post was made by an employee without authorization and promising an internal review. The Shanghai Jing'an District Market Supervision Bureau later fined the company 200,000 yuan for the ad. The case became a cautionary example of how a single ill-conceived social media post can trigger a regulatory and reputational crisis.
Why it happened
- The ad treated the customer's price sensitivity as a weakness to mock rather than a preference to respect, turning a promotion into an insult
- The post went live without legal or compliance review, despite being on the brand's official account
- Logitech's 'employee acting alone' defence may have been true but did not change the public perception that the brand was responsible for what appeared on its account
The lesson
An ad that insults the customer for buying your product destroys the relationship you are trying to build. The message is not price sensitivity — it is contempt.
