What happened
On 7 October 2026, LEGO's Corporate Quality division confirmed a manufacturing defect behind 'Crackgate': the head pieces of the Gingy minifigure from the Shrek Collectible Minifigures series (set 71053, $4.99 blind bags) and the Patrick Star figure from the SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom set (set 11386, $219.99) were developing cracks. Both sets launched on 1 September 2026; the problem surfaced on Reddit and fan forums in early September.
The failure is structural. Minifigure heads press onto a standard 3.18mm cylindrical neck peg, and a normal head's socket walls absorb the constant radial stress. Gingy's and Patrick's heads are oversized custom moulds — Patrick combines head and belly in one large element — so the thinner, differently contoured socket walls can exceed the yield threshold of LEGO's ABS plastic, producing stress whitening or a visible fracture along the back of the head.
LEGO said its quality team had identified the cause and was producing replacements that affected fans can request free of charge via Customer Service, telling fans it was 'really sorry for the disappointment'.
What it cost
Free replacement parts for every affected buyer; revised moulds in production; 'Crackgate' spread across fan forums within days
Why it happened
Oversized custom head moulds were mounted on the standard small neck peg, multiplying radial stress
Design verification apparently did not catch the long-term press-fit stress on the new geometries
The defect appeared within days of launch and spread publicly through collector communities
The fix requires newly moulded replacement parts, not a packaging or batch correction
The lesson
A standard interface is a silent specification: bolt an oversized mould onto the same 3.18mm neck peg and the stress maths stops being cosmetic.
Aftermath
LEGO is producing replacement parts and inviting every affected owner to contact Customer Service for a free swap; the statement was reported by fan outlets New Elementary and Stonewars, which had documented both failure modes. The company did not recall either set.
