Kintetsu ran a Nagoya department store for 60 years — redevelopment ended it
Open since 1966, Kintetsu's Nagoya store closed on 28 February 2026 for the station redevelopment — and Kintetsu withdrew from Nagoya entirely.

What happened
Kintetsu Department Store opened its Nagoya store beside Nagoya Station in November 1966; it later took the 'Kintetsu Passe' name and became one of the two faces of the station's shopping district. For about sixty years it served the Meieki area through every retail era.
The end came not from the market but from the group's own plans. The Nagoya Station district redevelopment, in which the Kintetsu Group participates, requires demolishing the Nagoya Kintetsu Building; sales had been declining for years, the facility was aging, and construction costs had climbed. Kintetsu announced on 26 May 2025 that the store would close at the end of February 2026 with the demolition — and that it would not reopen in the redevelopment complex.
Kintetsu Passe ended operations on 28 February 2026, the same day as neighbouring Meitetsu Department Store's main store — two station landmarks gone in one weekend. The company booked roughly ¥2 billion in special losses on the closure and exited the Nagoya market completely.
Why it happened
- The store sat on land the owner's redevelopment plan needed; once demolition was scheduled, renewal was never on the table.
- Years of declining sales and an aging facility meant there was no business case strong enough to fight for a place in the new complex.
- Choosing not to reopen — rather than downsizing into the redevelopment — turned a store closure into a full market exit.
The lesson
If your store stands inside a redevelopment plan, the closing date is set. Kintetsu accepted demolition without a seat in the new building — sixty years ended with a ¥2B loss and a full exit.
Aftermath
Kintetsu Department Store withdrew from Nagoya entirely; the Nagoya Kintetsu Building faces demolition as part of the station district redevelopment. Across Japan, station-front department stores keep falling to the same combination of redevelopment schedules and thinning sales.
