HISSO was a 15-year Hong Kong fashion chain — the retail winter shut all 18 stores

What happened

HISSO was a home-grown Hong Kong fashion label founded in 2011. Over 15 years, the brand built a presence of 12 stores across Hong Kong with a distinct aesthetic targeting local fashion-conscious consumers. In 2023, it launched a sister brand called Story Behind, which opened 6 additional stores.

On March 7, 2026, HISSO announced it was closing all 18 stores — both the 12 HISSO outlets and 6 Story Behind stores — with a deadline of April 7, 2026. A clearance sale offered discounts of up to 90% on remaining stock. The company cited Hong Kong's struggling retail sector and prolonged retail winter as the reason for winding down operations.

HISSO's closure was part of a broader wave of Hong Kong retail contraction. The city's retail sector, already weakened by the pandemic and the decline in mainland Chinese tourism, continued to struggle as locals increasingly shopped across the border in mainland cities like Shenzhen, where prices were lower and selection wider. A home-grown brand that had survived for 15 years could not hold on long enough for a recovery.

Why it happened

  • Hong Kong's retail sector has been in a prolonged winter since the pandemic, with consumer spending shifting to Shenzhen where prices are substantially lower
  • A local fashion chain competing on style and accessibility could not differentiate enough to withstand the cross-border shopping drain that has hollowed out Hong Kong mid-market retail
  • 15 years of operation meant the brand was not a flash in the pan, but it could not outlast the structural shift in Hong Kong consumer behavior
What it cost18 stores closed, brand equity liquidated at 90% offcostly

The lesson

A mid-market fashion brand in a city where locals go elsewhere to shop cannot cut prices enough to win them back. The problem was not the brand — it was where the brand was.
