FORME's 26 mall stores peaked at ¥1.6B in sales — fast fashion and no heir ended it

Form Co. built 26 select shops around AEON Malls in three prefectures. On 17 July 2026 it went bankrupt with ¥490M in debt, its stores closed the day before.

What happened

Form Co., founded in Imizu, Toyama in October 1994, ran women's and children's select shops — FORME, WARM WHITE and FORM+ — in shopping malls across Toyama, Fukui and Nara, mainly AEON Malls, aimed at women in their twenties to forties. At its peak the chain counted 26 stores and more than ¥1.6 billion in annual sales.

The middle of the market emptied out. Fast fashion's rise took the price-conscious shoppers who had bought curated mall apparel, and a chain built entirely on mall footfall had no second channel and no price story of its own. Tokyo Shoko Research also pointed to a succession failure: with no heir to take the company on, the founder-led chain had nowhere to go but liquidation.

The FORME stores closed on 16 July 2026; the next day the Toyama District Court's Takaoka branch ordered bankruptcy proceedings to begin. Liabilities were put at about ¥490 million — ¥489.52 million by Tokyo Shoko Research's count.

Why it happened

  • A mall select shop sits between fast fashion and premium brands; when fast fashion got cheaper and faster, the mid-priced curation lost its customers.
  • All 26 stores rode the same mall footfall — one format, one channel, no hedge when the format weakened.
  • The founder had no successor, so restructuring had no one to run it; bankruptcy became the only exit.

The lesson

Mall select shops sell curation, and curation at mid prices loses both ends when fast fashion improves. And a founder-led chain with no successor has one exit fewer when the model weakens.

Aftermath

FORME and WARM WHITE ended operations on 16 July 2026, and a bankruptcy trustee took over the estate. Regional mall fashion in Japan keeps thinning as local chains founded in the 1990s hit the same wall of fast-fashion competition and succession failure.
