GUESS left Taiwan once, came back, and shrank to a second full exit
GUESS withdrew from Taiwan, relaunched in 2016, then saw its footprint fall to four stores and announced a full exit by end of March 2026.

What happened
US fashion brand GUESS had already left Taiwan once before. In July 2016 it returned to the market with a relaunch at the ATT4FUN mall in Taipei, betting a fresh start could rebuild a brand that had previously struggled to hold the market.
The second attempt never took off the way the brand hoped. By 2024 GUESS had moved its Taipei presence to 微風南山, but the number of stores kept shrinking, and coverage noted the brand had 'held on for 10 years across Taiwan with only 4 stores left'.
In March 2026 the collapse accelerated. News reported that all GUESS stores would close by the end of the month, with clearance sales running at up to 70 percent off to clear remaining stock.
Local media tied the exit to the general difficulty of the mid-tier international fashion market in Taiwan, where global brands have been pulling back against weak demand. The 2026 closure marked GUESS's second exit from the country.
Why it happened
- The 2016 relaunch never rebuilt momentum, and the brand shrank from a flagship relaunch to a handful of stores over the following decade
- A mid-tier US denim label struggled to hold its position in a Taiwan market where the same spending was going to cheaper or more specialty brands
- The licensee kept running the business through a slow decline instead of either committing to a real regrowth plan or cutting sooner
The lesson
Re-entering a market needs a plan that outlasts the launch event — GUESS relaunched in Taiwan in 2016 and spent ten years shrinking back down to four stores before exiting again.
Aftermath
By end of March 2026 GUESS had closed all of its Taiwan stores, running clearance sales of up to 70 percent off. It was the brand's second exit from the market, following its previous withdrawal before the 2016 ATT4FUN relaunch and its 2024 move to 微風南山.
