Google's Gemini Super Bowl ad: $8M for a spot with a factual error and faked AI output
In 2025 Google spent ~$8M on a Super Bowl ad for Gemini AI. The Wisconsin spot had a cheese error, and The Verge reported the AI output was faked.

What happened
For Super Bowl LIX in February 2025, Google launched its most ambitious advertising play for the Gemini AI assistant: a campaign called '50 States, 50 Stories' that combined one national commercial with 50 regional spots, each showing a small business in a different state using Gemini in Google Workspace. The campaign was designed to demonstrate Gemini's practical utility for real businesses across America — and to counter the narrative that AI was hype without substance.
The execution undercut the message. Social media users quickly spotted a factual error in the Wisconsin spot concerning gouda cheese production. Worse, The Verge reported that Google had fabricated the AI output shown in the ad: the text Gemini supposedly generated appeared to have been plagiarised from the web rather than produced by the model. An ad about AI reliability had presented AI output that was neither reliable nor generated by AI.
Google edited the incorrect statistic out of the Wisconsin spot but never fully addressed the plagiarism allegation. The incident became a pointed irony — the company that spent the most on a Super Bowl AI commercial was the same one caught cutting corners on accuracy, exactly the problem AI was supposed to solve. For a product built on trust in automated output, the ad achieved the opposite of its intended effect.
Why it happened
- The Wisconsin spot contained a factual error about gouda cheese — an avoidable mistake that undermined the credibility of an AI accuracy pitch.
- The Verge reported that Gemini's supposed output was plagiarised from the web, not generated by AI — making the ad itself inauthentic.
- Google spent $7-8M on the national slot plus production costs for 50 customised regional ads, making the error expensive and highly visible.
- The contradiction was catastrophic for the message: an AI reliability ad featuring fabricated AI output.
The lesson
An ad that sells accuracy must survive the same scrutiny it asks for. If your AI ad's AI output is fake, the message about AI reliability becomes a joke.
