Fujimori (藤森), Iwate clothing store since 1918, bankrupt in 2026

Family Clothing Fujimori served Hirono and Kuji for over a century — depopulation and chain competition bankrupted the 108-year-old store in 2026.

What happened

Fujimori was founded in 1918 in Hirono, Iwate as the Fujimori Gofukuten (kimono and fabric shop) and incorporated under its current name in 1960. It ran clothing stores under the name Family Clothing Fujimori in Hirono and Kuji, surviving a century of change in rural northern Japan.

As the region's population shrank and competition intensified, clothing sales declined year after year. In 2004 the company moved into the care business — group homes and day-service centres — building a second leg alongside the retail trade.

The retail decline never stopped. On 31 August 2025 Fujimori closed its stores, and the care business was transferred to another company. The Morioka District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order on 27 February 2026, with liabilities of about ¥550 million.

Why it happened

  • Depopulation emptied the customer base: Hirono and Kuji are rural towns whose population decline no century-old store could reverse.
  • Chain and online competition squeezed a small-town clothing retailer that had no price or assortment edge to fight back with.
  • The 2004 care-business pivot did not fix the retail core: the stores kept bleeding for two more decades, and the debts outlived the diversification.

The lesson

Diversification beside a dying core is not a turnaround: Fujimori built a second business in 2004 but never fixed the stores, and the retail debts pulled the whole company under.

Aftermath

Fujimori closed its Family Clothing Fujimori stores on 31 August 2025 and transferred its care business to another operator. The Morioka District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order on 27 February 2026 with liabilities of about ¥550 million, ending a business that traced back to 1918.
