What happened
Hanyu Sewing was a clothing workshop in Kitakata, Fukushima Prefecture, founded in 1970, sewing thick garments — jackets, coats and corporate uniforms — and other ladies' apparel for outside orders, along with some construction work.
Orders dried up as demand fell. Sales declined and losses continued until the company was in excess debt and cash flow was squeezed — it stopped business in June 2025.
On 16 June 2026 the Fukushima District Court, Aizuwakamatsu branch, issued a bankruptcy commencement order with liabilities of about ¥220 million.
Why it happened
- No orders, no company: as a contract sewing shop, Hanyu had nothing to sell but stitching time, and the demand for made-in-Japan jackets and uniforms kept falling.
- Losses that outlived the business: deficits pushed the company into excess liabilities before it stopped, and the year between stop and court order changed nothing.
- A regional workshop's ceiling: with orders shrinking across the industry, there was no scale or brand to fall back on — only the buildings and the debts.
The lesson
