Chery's best-selling sedan topped China's 315 complaint list for quality defects

The Arrizo 8 sold 156,000 units in 2024 but led the Wuhan 315 Auto Expo complaint ranking with infotainment crashes, noises and leaks.

Chery Automobile

What happened

Chery's Arrizo 8 sedan, the company's best-selling passenger car with 156,000 units sold in 2024, became the top-ranked complaint at the 2025 Wuhan 315 Auto Expo. The vehicle topped the problem-vehicle complaint ranking alongside the Chery Enjoy, with owners reporting a range of persistent quality defects.

The most common complaints included infotainment system crashes and lag — with some owners reporting the system froze over 20 times in less than a year, including three navigation freezes during highway driving. Other issues included body and steering-column noises, air-conditioning water leaks, battery drain, rust on A-pillar and door welds, and steering pull. The infotainment failure rate was estimated at 30%, even on models equipped with the Qualcomm 8155 chip.

Chery's response focused on software updates and component replacements, but many owners reported the same problems recurring after repairs. The 2025 model year brought process improvements, but the quality issues on the 2022-2024 models left a large owner base frustrated with a brand gaining market share.

Why it happened

  • Chery prioritized sales volume over quality control, shipping 156,000 units with a 30% infotainment failure rate
  • The company used software updates and component swaps as fixes without addressing root causes, so problems recurred after repair
  • A wide range of unrelated defects — infotainment, AC, rust, steering — suggests a systemic quality assurance failure rather than a single parts issue

The lesson

A best-selling model with a high defect rate creates a growing owner base that becomes a source of negative publicity — volume amplifies quality failures, it does not dilute them
