Burger King shrank to one Hong Kong airport store — 30 years of urban presence gone

Burger King, in Hong Kong since the 1980s and once 20+ stores strong, closed its last urban outlet at The Peak on 31 Aug 2025.

What happened

Burger King first entered Hong Kong in the 1980s but withdrew entirely for a time. It returned in 2003, when franchisee SSP Hong Kong opened a store at the airport, and the chain later expanded to more than 20 outlets across the city.

A second franchisee, 健味堡有限公司, took over from 2007, but its stores all closed in 2015 and it bowed out of the market. By August 2025 only two Burger King locations remained in Hong Kong: the Peak (凌霄閣) and the airport departure-hall airside store, both run by SSP Hong Kong.

On 31 August 2025 the Peak store closed for good, pushing a limited-time discount on two Whopper sets to mark the end. After it, only the single airport airside branch stays open, meaning the brand has all but retreated from urban Hong Kong.

No official business rationale was given. Food writers and customers pointed to Hong Kong's broader wave of closures, shifting tourist spending patterns, more Hong Kong residents eating while travelling away from the city, and the difficulty any fast-food chain faces competing with McDonald's' entrenched local dominance.

Why it happened

  • The brand never built the local habit that McDonald's holds, so it could not justify rent in central or tourist districts
  • A franchisee model that changed hands weakened the chain before it had a loyal base, and the 2015 exit of the second franchisee gutted its reach
  • By the time only the Peak and airport stores remained, the brand concentrated on tourist and transit traffic — a base that shrank as tourist habits changed

The lesson

A globally known brand means nothing without a local base — Burger King shrank to a single airport store because it never matched the local incumbent, and franchisee turnover left no loyal habit.

Aftermath

After the Peak store closed on 31 August 2025, Burger King's only Hong Kong outlet is the airside store inside the airport departure hall. The chain, once over 20 stores, has effectively exited urban Hong Kong, and customers now have to pass through security to get a Whopper.
