What happened
Carrols Restaurant Group, Burger King's largest US franchisee with more than 1,000 Burger King restaurants and 60 Popeyes locations, ran an accidental double discount on Whopper value meals from June to August 2019. The error let customers stack savings the franchisee never intended, and it survived a full quarter of peak summer trade before being caught.
The bill: $12.4 million in lost sales and $10.9 million in lost EBITDA, disclosed in November 2019. CEO Dan Accordino called it a 'one-time error' and said the company corrected the discounting in late August. The mistake also dragged down Burger King's overall same-store sales — and Carrols' shares had fallen 23% in 2019 while parent Restaurant Brands International's stock was up 26%.
Analyst Jeremy Hamblin of Craig-Hallum Capital still rated the $394-million-market-cap stock a buy, writing that it traded 'almost like it's going out of business' despite what he called self-inflicted wounds, thanks to Impossible Whopper and Popeyes chicken sandwich momentum drawing new and old customers.
What it cost
Sales down $12.4 million and EBITDA down $10.9 million for the quarter; the stock fell 23% in 2019 while parent Restaurant Brands gained 26%.
Why it happened
Menu pricing changes need automated guardrails: a double discount that survives three months of transactions means no anomaly check existed.
Franchisee scale magnifies small configuration errors: one wrong promotion setting replicated across 1,000+ stores became an eight-figure loss.
The visibility lag hurt twice — the error was fixed in late August, but investors only learned the cost on November's earnings call.
The lesson
Franchisee scale magnifies small configuration errors: one wrong promotion setting replicated across 1,000+ restaurants becomes an eight-figure loss before a human notices.
Aftermath
Carrols corrected the pricing in late August 2019 and called the hit one-time; November 2019 analyst coverage still recommended the stock on Impossible Whopper and Popeyes momentum. The material records no further consequences.
