What happened
FC Girondins de Bordeaux, winners of Ligue 1 in 2008-09, were placed into administration twice after Gérard Lopez took over in 2021, and the DNCG — the financial watchdog that oversees French professional clubs — enforced relegations that dropped the club from the top tier to Championnat National 1, the fourth division, for two seasons.
In 2026 further financial problems led the DNCG to relegate Bordeaux again, to Regional 1, the sixth tier. On 30 September 2026 the club announced that US-based investment fund Park Bench had bought it for a symbolic one euro, with assumption of debts reported by French outlet Ici at close to €18 million. Lopez exited after his five-year spell.
Park Bench, a data analytics and software company owned by American Evan Sofer and Briton James Bord, already held shares in Spanish second-division Córdoba and was majority shareholder of Scottish Championship club Dunfermline Athletic. The sale still required approval from the Regional Management Control Commission of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Football League and the Bordeaux Commercial Court for the club to avoid liquidation and start its sixth-tier season.
What it cost
Three relegations and two administrations took the 2008-09 French champion to Regional 1; sold for €1 with about €18 million of debts assumed; liquidation risk remained.
Why it happened
Ownership under Lopez never stabilized the finances, so the DNCG's licensing system converted each shortfall into a sporting penalty.
Relegation is compounding: every drop shrinks revenue, making the next season's budget harder to certify and the next relegation likelier.
By 2026 the club's equity was worth nothing to its owner — the €1 sale transferred debts because the alternative was liquidation.
The lesson
A famous name is not a balance sheet: DNCG-style financial licensing turns money trouble into sporting death, and each relegation compounds the next season's revenue hole.
Aftermath
As of the 30 September 2026 announcement, Bordeaux needed league and court approvals to play in Regional 1; the material records no decision on those approvals.
