ato's Aoyama flagship ran 32 years — now the brand lives online only

ato opened its Aoyama flagship in 1993, the year the brand was founded. On 31 January 2026 it closed — the draping label moves to online-only.

What happened

ato was founded by designer Yo Matsumoto in 1993, and the same year opened its Aoyama flagship in Minami-Aoyama — one store that was both shop and stage, where the label's collections were presented. The brand built its name on construction: three-dimensional cutting for every item, and a tag carrying the pattern-maker's name sewn into each garment.

After more than thirty-two years the door closed. On 31 January 2026 the Aoyama store shut — announced, without a stated reason, on the brand's own Instagram. From here ato runs online-first: the official online store and ZOZOTOWN.

What vanished was not just a shop but a runway. ato gave up the physical room its shows lived in, trading a 32-year-old stage for digital shelves.

Why it happened

  • A single-store label carries one rent, and when wholesale and footfall thin out, that rent is the whole of the problem.
  • The announcement named no cause — only gratitude and the new channels; the exit itself said the store no longer paid.
  • There was no relocation and no smaller successor store: the choice was not downsizing but leaving physical retail entirely.

The lesson

When the shop is also the stage, closing it changes the brand. ato showed its collections in the Aoyama store for over 32 years; when that era ended, the label didn't downsize — it went online-only.

Aftermath

ato continues as an online-first label through its official store and ZOZOTOWN. The Minami-Aoyama space that had staged the brand's collections since 1993 was handed back; no successor format was announced.
