Amazon killed Halo, its fitness wearables, in year three — refunds all round
Amazon's answer to Fitbit lasted three years. Halo went dark in July 2023, recent purchases refunded, and the health-wearables ambition died with it.

What happened
Amazon launched Halo in August 2020, its first serious push into health wearables: a screenless band that used AI to analyse tone of voice and body-fat scans. The pitch was data Amazon said rivals could not match. Reviews were mixed — the tone analysis drew mockery and privacy complaints — but Amazon kept expanding the line with the Halo View and Halo Rise and a membership service.
On 26 April 2023 Amazon announced the end of the line. Halo devices and the app stopped working on 31 July 2023, and Amazon promised refunds: the full purchase price for devices bought in the previous 12 months, plus unused membership fees. The shutdown came as Amazon cut costs across the company, and parts of the Halo team moved to other projects.
What made the failure expensive was the refund promise: Amazon chose to pay customers rather than leave them with dead hardware. The move closed Amazon's health-wearables ambition — three years of product investment written off with the announcement that the category was not worth defending.
Why it happened
- Amazon built Halo around features customers did not ask for — voice-tone analysis and body scans — while Apple and Fitbit already owned the core fitness tracking people actually wanted.
- The product never found a committed audience, so when Amazon's cost-cutting drive arrived, a hardware line with no breakout sales was easy to close — refunding buyers was cheaper than defending it.
- Amazon treated the shutdown as a cost decision, not a strategy decision: no successor, no handoff — the ambition was simply abandoned, which turns the whole investment into a write-off.
The lesson
Amazon shipped a wearable nobody asked for — tone-of-voice analysis and body scans — then killed it with refunds when cuts came. A product whose only exit is refunding owners was never a product.
Aftermath
Halo devices and the Halo app were switched off on 31 July 2023. Amazon refunded the full purchase price for devices bought within the previous 12 months, plus unused membership fees, without requiring the devices to be returned. The shutdown was announced as part of a company-wide cost-cutting drive, and parts of the Halo team were reassigned to other Amazon products. Amazon's vice president for health and wellness devices, Melissa Cha, said demand had dropped and the business could not be sustained. The line was never revived.
