Coppola self-funded Megalopolis for $136M; it grossed $11.5M worldwide

Megalopolis was Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed epic — a Roman-parallel story of a visionary architect rebuilding New York. The Wall Street Journal reported he had poured $120 million of his own money into it with costs reaching $136 million, and Vulture reported a $200 million loan against his Napa winery estate to cover the bill.

The production itself was troubled — The Hollywood Reporter detailed a ballooning budget and a crew exodus during filming. Released September 27, 2024, the film opened to $4 million domestically, earned a D CinemaScore, and carried another estimated $30–50 million in prints and advertising.

The theatrical run ended October 24, 2024, with a worldwide total of $11,534,167 — $7,629,085 domestic and $3,905,082 international, per Forbes' final tally. Against $120–136 million of Coppola's own money, the film recovered roughly a tenth of its cost.
