Coppola self-funded Megalopolis for $136M; it grossed $11.5M worldwide

What happened

Megalopolis was Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed epic — a Roman-parallel story of a visionary architect rebuilding New York. The Wall Street Journal reported he had poured $120 million of his own money into it with costs reaching $136 million, and Vulture reported a $200 million loan against his Napa winery estate to cover the bill.

The production itself was troubled — The Hollywood Reporter detailed a ballooning budget and a crew exodus during filming. Released September 27, 2024, the film opened to $4 million domestically, earned a D CinemaScore, and carried another estimated $30–50 million in prints and advertising.

The theatrical run ended October 24, 2024, with a worldwide total of $11,534,167 — $7,629,085 domestic and $3,905,082 international, per Forbes' final tally. Against $120–136 million of Coppola's own money, the film recovered roughly a tenth of its cost.

Why it happened

  • One person's conviction funded the whole bet: with no studio risk on the table, no institutional voice could stop the spending, and the budget ballooned to $136M mid-production amid a crew exodus.
  • The budget was the whole plan: at $120M+ of personal money, the film needed a wide, enthusiastic audience — and a $4M opening with a D CinemaScore showed the pitch had no market.
  • The film was made for its maker, not its market: a Roman-fable epic that stalled for decades did not suddenly find an audience, and $30–50M of prints and advertising could not manufacture one.

The lesson

Self-funding removes the last brake: no one could tell Coppola no, and $136M bought a film that earned $11.5M. When the same person decides and pays, the market test lands on opening weekend.
