Yoo Ah-in's drug case ended his Nepa deal and two years of work
Nepa bet its outdoor brand on Korea's hottest actor. His drug case cost him the contract in 2023 and the courts sealed his sentence in July 2025.

What happened
Yoo Ah-in was the most acclaimed actor of his Korean generation — Cannes-touring films, best-actor awards, and a portfolio that ran from luxury houses to mass-market brands. Nepa, an outdoor clothing brand, had signed him as the face of its image.
In February 2023 police began investigating him for drug use after tests came back positive for cannabis. Nepa said it was watching the investigation. A hundred days later, on May 19, 2023 — the day police sought an arrest warrant — Nepa announced it was terminating his model contract, the first major brand to do so. Musinsa, another sponsor, kept saying it was reviewing.
The courts took two more years. He was convicted in September 2024 and sentenced to a year in prison with a 2 million won fine; the appeals court suspended the sentence in February 2025; the Supreme Court confirmed the suspension on July 3, 2025. By then the commercial career was long over.
Why it happened
- Nepa's image rested on Yoo Ah-in's prestige; a drug investigation converted the prestige into legal risk overnight.
- The termination came the same day police sought an arrest warrant — for Korean advertisers, the warrant is the trigger, not the verdict.
- Musinsa's 'reviewing' position shows the alternative: brands without a decision date lose control of their own timing.
- Two years of trials kept the story in the news, which is what kept every other advertiser away even after the sentence turned lenient.
The lesson
Korean advertisers cut on suspicion, not conviction: Nepa held on 100 days of investigation, then terminated when the arrest warrant was sought. A celebrity contract is a lease on reputation.
Aftermath
The Supreme Court confirmed Yoo Ah-in's suspended one-year sentence on July 3, 2025, ending the legal saga. Nepa had already terminated his contract in May 2023; no major brand re-signed him through the two years of litigation. The case is now the standard reference for how a single drug investigation ends a Korean actor's advertising career.
