The paleontologist who fabricated 458 papers — and the Himalayan fossil hoax

Vishwa Jit Gupta was an Indian paleontologist at Panjab University in Chandigarh. Between 1966 and 1989, he published 458 research articles and 5 books on Himalayan geology, collaborating with 128 eminent scientists worldwide. He was lauded as a leading authority on the geology of the Himalayas and was appointed Director of the Institute of Paleontology at Panjab University.

In 1989, Australian geologist John Talent published a paper in Nature titled 'The case of the peripatetic fossils.' Talent and a colleague had visited a road cut in Nepal where Gupta reported finding prolific Devonian conodonts — microfossils used to date rock layers. They found no fossils at all. They then noticed that the same image appeared in two different papers claiming different locations. Further investigation revealed that Gupta had plagiarized illustrations from an 1879 monograph on fossils from New York. Many of his 458 papers appeared to be based on fabricated or manipulated data.

Panjab University suspended Gupta in February 1991, but a new Vice Chancellor reinstated him in January 1992. A legal inquiry in 1994 found him guilty of research misconduct, but the university Senate allowed him to continue his service. He was barred from becoming dean but otherwise faced no meaningful consequences. He retired with full superannuation benefits in 2002 and later shifted to writing environmental books. He died in 2022 at age 80.
