Valentino Beauty entered Korea in 2022 — both stores closed by 2025

What happened

In March 2022, L'Oréal Korea launched Valentino Beauty — the fragrance and cosmetics line of the Italian luxury fashion house — in the South Korean market. The brand entered with a pop-up in Seoul's Hannam-dong, followed by two department-store counters: Lotte Department Store main branch and Lotte Jamsil branch. The collection included Valentino's fragrance line (Born in Roma, Uomo, etc.) and colour cosmetics. L'Oréal invested in counter fit-outs, marketing, and inventory.

Less than four years later, Valentino Beauty began withdrawing from Korea. The Lotte Jamsil counter closed on November 9, 2025; the Lotte Main branch counter closed on December 17, 2025. The brand's online mall was scheduled to shut down in the first half of 2026. L'Oréal Korea confirmed the withdrawal, saying online sales would continue until March 2026.

The Korean luxury beauty market is among the most competitive in Asia. Chanel, Dior, YSL and other established luxury houses have decades of brand equity and department-store relationships. Korean indie beauty brands — affordable, fast-moving, sold through Olive Young — captured the mid-market. Valentino Beauty entered as a latecomer, squeezed between established luxury players above and the K-beauty indie wave below. L'Oréal Korea was also streamlining its portfolio, exiting other brands including Maybelline Korea and Fresh Korea in the same period.

Valentino Beauty's Korea exit echoed the brand's earlier withdrawal from Taiwan (2025), where it had run three counters for two and a half years before closing. The pattern suggested a global brand that could not translate its fashion-house name into beauty retail traction in Asia's most competitive markets.

Why it happened

  • The Korean luxury beauty market was already dominated by Chanel, Dior, YSL and other houses with decades of local brand equity — Valentino entered as a latecomer with no beauty-specific recognition
  • Korean indie beauty brands were capturing the mid-market through Olive Young, leaving luxury brands fighting over a shrinking premium segment
  • L'Oréal Korea was streamlining its portfolio — Maybelline and Fresh also exited Korea in the same period — and Valentino Beauty was one of the weaker performers
  • Two department-store counters could not generate enough foot traffic to justify the cost of operations against brands with 10 to 50 counters

The lesson

L'Oréal launched Valentino Beauty in Korea in 2022, squeezed between Chanel and Dior above and K-beauty below. Two stores could not generate enough traffic against brands with decades of equity.
